Maybe You Should Know (a Christmas Cover)

This song was popularized by Kenny Rogers and while listening on You Tube and looking for a Karaoke Version there seems to be very few of these online and most of them distorted.

Very nice song but shame all you can here online basically is distorted so I decided why not revive this track by creating my own version.  Simple piano strings re-arrangement with a drum loop on the choruses.

Made use of the vocals to create that spatial impression as well as basic blending with the backing vocals.  Desktop recording with a 2i2 interface usb mixed and mastered using headphones (not really recommended and not ideal) but it worked.

An easy way to get into the Music Industry will get you noticed internationally

The Music Industry has been swept by a lot of new developments from analogue to digital,  tape to CD’s, super audio CD’s to mp3’s and more with online selling, download sites and even illegal download sites as a digital platform for the aspiring artist or musician.  Then we have the social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Vimeo, Flicker, Tumbler, WordPress, and more as the new age biggest and the easiest link for any budding singer/songwriter or musician to be heard and discovered globally.

Working for Polycosmic Records and Dyna Records from the analogue era up to the digital age I have personally seen and felt these changes and the way the market behaves especially in Asia where piracy is a “NORM”.   It’s part of the industry and you can’t get rid of it.

So, how did we do it then?  How can we do it?  Or simply, how can we get into the Music industry and be discovered internationally. A sure hit solution for any artist from the UK, USA, EU, Canada, Australia and outside the Philippines.

This is the music business and how it works is that an artist needs a good following.  Maybe a million hits on you tube, a million followers on twitter, a million followers on your FB like page, a million audience atleast I guess and then you can be noticed by record companies who likes the idea of profiting from your songs selling  this to a million audiences.

Say, you have a ready album recording of your original songs and compositions.

Before, in the mid 90’s, recording companies could easily sign up a singer to become an artist if you have a good recording voice, good materials and a presentable face and body.  Straight away they’ll sign you up and you’ll get to be noticed easily by an audience of more than 90 million (in the Philippines alone) talking about you on the radio, tv, print media and news tabloid, buying and listening to your music.

Now, with a market of more than 100 million plus 10 million abroad nobody would like to sign you up even if you have the voice, the recorded album on a CD master, good songs, sexy body.  Why ?  You need a good following… an audience… a network… a captured market from the point of view of the record company who will finance your project.  Mind you before you can get your slice of the pie the record company secures their share first.

Well, if no one will sign you up then do it yourself.  DIY it !  100% will be yours.

Get an adviser, acting manager or producer who knows the trick in that industry.  The Philippines has more than 100 million listeners locally and 10 million all over the globe.  This will be your audience so, what you need to do is get the top 3 tracks you have from your album recording and match it with the kind of genre this market wants.  You only need an audience to be discovered internationally and the throw and bounce effect works here.

Throw your materials in Asia to get a wider audience and have this following noticed by scouts and or record companies in the UK, EU, USA, CANADA, AUSTRALIA, and all over the globe.

No to record companies,  go for the label that will help you with a sure hit TRI-MEDIA solution which covers the following:  I know a few and it only starts from £19,500-£26,500.

Kurzweil SP3X New Baby

Kurzweil SP3X New Baby

Amazing stage piano touch, aftertouch and sound. If you haven’t heard the Kurzweil SP3X the comparison from Roland, Yamaha, Korg and other top keys in the market this has the edge above all sound quality wise. I have been a keyboard player for more than 20 years now and started with an ensoniq VFX SD to the Korg 01W then Roland XP50 and XP80 then owned a Korg Triton Extreme and a Roland Fantom but this one is on a higher league of its own. First time I’ve heard the K2600 from an arranger friend of mine I was impressed by the pianos but years and years of upgrading came across the SP3X sounds much more amazing. If not with personal circumstances and recent events that happened I will never never and will never sell this stage piano with all accessories and etc.

In as new condition, no scratches whatsoever but apologies for my photos it came from a samsung S2.   Rest assured it’s in it’s as new form and only selling for half the price with wheeled softcase, pedal, and manuals complete.

According to Howard Dy the CEO of Dyna Records they are looking for more artists and songwriters for future projects.

You Made Me Stronger – A Recording Session

You Made Me Stronger – A Recording Session

On the go recording sessions without edits at all…

See what you think of this recording session with an amateur singer doing a cover song from Janet Jacksons.  One of the popular hits of Janet Jackson from 1997 while I was working for Polycosmic Records in the Philippines.  A Polygram international sister company in Asia.  I had the chance to release this album and recently the song was revived by Asia’s Songbird Ms. Regine Velasquez and we took a video karaoke and converted it into an mp3 for the backing track.

Listen to the session and think of how long the recording was ?  what mics used ? softwares ? outboard gears ? and the usual recording session gears and stuff.  See what you think of the track and treatment…. from monitors to everything you can think of inside the studio.

Here’s the answer now for you… of course you will be expecting a great recording and mix specially on this one.  But think out of the box… given 1.5 hours to record without vocal editing instead straight recording using a laptop, 2i2 interface from focusrite, a rode NT2A condenser mic, a mic cable, Cubase 5 and a pair of headphones M1000, I think this one is a great output…

On the go you would expect to bump into some friends you know asking for a Karaoke style no edit recording sessions  like this one.  What can you do this is a reality of life… life of a mobile sound engineer maybe… hehehe…

constrained with time… budget… tools… and materials as well as a non-experienced amateur singer… this is what you get…

Are you a Music Producer then Logic Pro X is for you…

Here you go guys and gals the long awaited Logic Pro X.  Out now… guess it’s only £140 quid upgrade or full software sorry I haven’t checked yet.  Anyway here’s a link for you…

http://play.macprovideo.com/logic-pro-100-whats-new-in-logic-pro-x/intro

Watch it … learn it… but buy it first … enjoy music production and enjoy your music while recording onto Logic Pro X.

there a lot’s of budding music producers in the music industry who’s still confused on what to go for in terms of DAW.  So, why don’t you check out Logic Pro X.  Please don’t get fooled in going for and using video software… for your audio productions…it’s not that it’s wrong but it won’t give justice to your music production.  Why make your life difficult when you can make it easier using the suitable software to produce your music.  The native plug-ins are far more designed to do in depth or detailed tweaks and adjustments to your music as with video software.

Mixed, Mastered and Produced song by Ron Ricoh from Ireland

Ron Ricoh a singer songwriter and a very good guitar player from Ireland.

With his own composition Gumising Ka (Wake up you) mixed, mastered and produced by Evangel Ric Lapore.  Great track great vocals as well as harmonies and most of all great guitars.  Love the crunch and the lead… have a listen guys and gals… you might like it.

The song talks about waking up … it’s only a dream… get real and stop dreaming.  Wake up and you can do it… wake up from the problems you have you can do it.

Used Logic and Mastered in Cubase 7.  Can you tell ?

Also, to mention Kabir for assisting in the mix Logic… cheers bro…

Soundproofing Solution the ESMONO BOOTH only from Studiospares

Just thought of posting this again as this is quite a unique product for home studios making them portable and quick to install…

Evangel Ric Lapore

I would like to share this to anybody out there looking to invest in a recording studio… yes one can get the best and most expensive studio monitors and gears but if your room acoustics is not up to standard then that will be money wasted in a way… having a treated room as well as acoustically tuned  in some ways would be ideal.  But if you want something easy and quick to install, modern stylish discrete design, reasonably priced, transportable and basically not a permanent structure which you could knock down take with you then assemble in a different location… check the Esmono Booth below is a video.

I’m one of the fortunate people who managed to film this Esmono Booth installation at Amersham & Wycombe college last Sat. 13th Oct. 2012.  Working for a big company in London who supplies to the Pro Audio market and the Recording…

Studiospares 30th Anniversary Catalogue

2013-03-08 13.26.03

Having to work for a Pro Audio company who after 30 long years in the Pro Audio business here in the UK still exists and is considered to be the producer of the Pro Audio Bible in the UK is a great pleasure and opportunity.

One maybe have noticed that with the economic instability here in Europe and UK some big pro audio names have gone into administration  and has gone into profitability issues and hardships.  Sound Control was a massive company who’s gone into admin as well as Turnkey and I’m hearing some news about the other ones just trying to survive.  It’s a difficult market at this point in time and  Studiospares Ltd. still lives and is making profit. What’s the secret ? well, it’s for you to discover (ask me… hehehe)  but the Managing Director Barry Lambden (founder of Studiospares) is one entrepreneur who really knows his stuff both in the world of electronics and business. Very inspirational boss I would say and very simple yet determined. He is an ICON I would say as being the chief engineer of REVOX who pioneered the 8 track tape recorder few decades ago before the Japanese mass produced them.  The GM Richard Venable is another inspirational boss… simple yet aware… soon I’ll get my franchise sorted thanks sirs…

The STUDIOSPARES catalogue was a big joy to complete very technical to a level one needs to interpret for it’s customers in the Pro Audio market. Very happy and proud to have played a big part of that 30th Anniversary catalogue Just loving the technical … the products, the sales, the field work and installs, the business plan for future expansions wow… everything…

I would like to share it with you and if you don’t have a copy email Studiospares.co.uk they will send you one. It’s a great book to have to guide you what products you need to get.

Here’s what the MD has to say …

” You are a self motivated professional person who should do well in anything you turn your hand to.  It was good to be able to leave everything to you  …….    It certainly helped us … “

Thanks a lot sir for this …

SAE (School of Audio Engineering) Romania

SAE Visit

A job at SAE Romania

This was my final visit at SAE Romania after 2 invitations been made for a supposed to be a very good opportunity.  It was a choice of having to run the SAE Romania Audio Engineering school as General Manager or having to Head the Audio Department of the said school and the later one did happen.

Curriculum development is one area that I love doing really especially in the field of Audio Engineering and Music Production and Technology as well as the Music Business.  This was like a dream course about more than 15 years ago when this elusive course was never available in the Philippines.  All you have that time was the manufacturers manuals for Roland, Yamaha, and KORG  the big synth workstation manufacturers who I owe most of my technical learning along with demo days and special manufacturers training for Shure, Mackie, Behringer, Alesis, Sony, TL Audio,  and of course the three big names in the workstation keyboards market and Ensoniq.  Jobs came to me to work as a FREELANCE musical arranger and producer in my own home recording studio back in the days.  Well, Soundchaser was a Pro Audio company who contributed to that respect as well.  Managing their wholesale and retail distribution as well as sound reinforcement rental systems was a very good experience as well doing installations to small to medium sized venues.  We had Mackie, Shure, Kurzweil, Soundtracs, Alesis, Hafler, Gibson and all other brands you name it.  But it was at Manchester MIDI School where I first got my formal music production and audio engineering training with Cubase and bit of Logic Pro as the platform and a Steinberg Certification after finishing that Diploma with flying marks of excellence solid 95%.

After this having completed the curriculum at MIDI School proceeded to Salford University with my Bsc Professional Sound and Video Technology degree which combines the Audio with Video and Web content creation for delivery of content to the internet.  Social Media and Technology and digital presence was one area very important as a marketing tool for any business or individual now a days.  Gained awards from the School of Computing Science and Engineering and was top of my class first year and 2nd years with solid 75% and 74%  respectively.   So, this was the next formal training and new curriculum set  I came across in the field of audio engineering, video engineering and web engineering.

SAE was another Audio Engineering curriculum … this paved the way for a new combination degree course which fuses all three curriculum into one unique degree in Media.  And hopefully soon can be released and opened to learners and maybe help the Audio Engineering Industry in the Philippines and the South East of Asia.  My travels to Poland and Romania as well as in the Philippines doing masterclasses in Audio Music Production and updates in the Media World from the Media City UK has contributed to the knowledge and experience of students and people in this very interesting field.  I came across very interesting people, places and practices that one would only see when you set foot at the doors of a country like Romania or Poland in Europe.  The decision to come back to the UK was a major one with reasons only a few people know my mentor and boss at Studiospares UK and a few close friends.  It was good but the decision was better.  Life is a choice and there’s only a handful of choices to make and when you decide that’s the one for you there will always be another open door who’ll let you in … SMILE !!!

The Album Launch - ERELA MAE

May 12, 2013 will be ERELA MAE’s CD album launch very talented artist from Dagenham, London. She’s only 17 years old and the sweetest voice I’ve heard as well as a very humble easy to deal with attitude. With 10 unpublished compositions from the UK Songwriting Competition, USA Songwriting and Philpop music festival.  As album music producer I’m inviting you to come down to watch her live and get a copy of her album. “ERELA MAE”.

My work as Products, Marketing and Business Development for a big pro audio company has contributed much as well. Also, the side projects like this one.

I owe my filming and video production skills to Dr. Wilfred Darlington my mentor who used to spend 40 years of his life serving the BBC.

Paul Sayer you have been instrumental as well and this is one of the products of your inspiring students like me.

Thanking the Salford University and Media City Family from sir Josh Hirst, Phil Duncan, Bruno Fazenda, Dave Eustace, Henrick Mattson, Ben Shirley, Marrianne Patera, Dave Tolan and to those I forgot to mention Neil Bruce thanks a lot. JZ V11 vs Neumann U47

JZ V11 Custom GDC67 Capsule vs Neumann U47
Steve of Unit 8 Studios in Hackney, London

Steve of Unit 8 Studios in
Hackney, London

JZ V11 vs Neumann U47

JZ Vintage 11 vs. Neumann U47 (original)

The JZ Microphone V11 RED Custom with GDC67 Capsule (Neumann U67 Clone) Price £300 (standard black) -£741 (custom red with GDC67 Capsule No Engraved name)  recorded side by side  an original Neumann U47 (£1999-£2000 online).  I have always been a fan of microphones as a vocalist and musician and we know that when you talk about the Neumann U67 or Neumann U47 or the Neumann U87i or Neumann U89i you will be expecting a really good microphone with a price tag that won’t go lower than £1800  or a price tag that’s close to £2000 or even more.  So, when I heard about the JZ mics few months ago while trying to sort out our website A to Z mics with Studiospares in London I came across the JZ microphones.  Said to come from Latvia this guy who invented them Jaris Zurins (JZ)  worked for more than 20 years repairing the Neumanns and other vintage mics Telefunkens and AKG’s with his dad who inspired and helped the designed this Modern Vintage Sounding Microphones.  I immediately checked online prices and the reviews and sound that these mics could produced against the know brands.  Surprisingly people are blown away by them take for example Lady Gaga’s Audio Engineer/Producer and other big names in the industry.  So,  price was the next factor to see after the reviews and sound clips I’ve heard.  The V11 Standard which is Black in color very nice is only £344 from their site but I have a contact who sells at £300 (let me know if you want one)   this is crazy 1/6 or 1/7 of the price of the Neumanns but sounds close if not better.

This was the reason I got my own custom and the standard V11.  So, working with other studios and studio engineers we want today 9th March 2013 with my Singer ERELA MAE and his dad TOTO Tolentino to one of Londons Recording Studios in Hackney, Unit 8 Recording Studios as they have the original Neumann U47.  That you can see in the picture above and to my surprise as well as Steves (in-house studio engineer) straight away when Erela Mae sang thru the mics we both looked at each other and looked at the NEVE Preamps to check the settings for the 3rd time.  We were in the discussion mode trying to figure out why … and what is happening here ?  so, with same settings and same everything you can tell the JZ V11 Custom RED with GDC67 Capsule is louder yet clean and brighter with airy presence.  No tweaks needed man !  you can leave it as it is without EQ,  it’s like tuned already… Amazing  just amazing.  This blown us away while the vintage Neumann U47 you hear the classic sound it was DARKER and LONELY I would say same with Steve comments.  It has its own characteristic praised by many over the years but man… these JZ mics are the modern vintage mics sounded OPEN and with an AIR or PRESENCE one would love specially if you want your song to sound POSITIVE and HAPPY.  Depends if you want a dark sort of color but to me it’s time to change our views with Microphones.  Let us hear your thoughts.

Hear what Steve has to say about it.

Studiospares 30th Year Anniversary Celebration on Valentines Day 2013

Congratulations Studiospares !

2

The UK’s favourite professional audio supplier, Studiospares, celebrated its 30th Anniversary on Thursday with a party at their Staples Corner premises. Directors and founders Barry and Pearl Lambden were presented with gold watches in recognition of 30 years service with the company. MD Barry Lambden thanked staff and customers for their support over 3 decades that he described as hard work but great fun! In that time the company has grown from nothing to sales of over £5M per year, has weathered several recessions, has no borrowings and currently employs more than 20 people.

Recalling the first Studiospares catalogue in 1983, Barry recalled how the text was simply typed on paper and together with the photographs, pasted to large white boards ready for the printers. The catalogue content, mainly reel-to-reel recorders, Ampex tape, and related accessories, has of course changed out of all recognition over the last 30 years, and Barry vowed that the company would continue to adapt as the industry changes in the future.

 Cheers Barry

This was the message given by Barry Lambden who spent most of his life building the Studiospares business.  He was one of the UK pioneering engineers who designed the first 8 track tape recorded REVOX which was massively accepted in the world of Pro Audio few decades ago.  And I would say it’s a privilege to have worked with this guy.  He knows very well his electronics and his stuff up till now 73 years old he still is very active in product design and product development.  Wish him more success in the coming years … he is a very good mentor and friend.
