An easy way to get into the Music Industry will get you noticed internationally

The Music Industry has been swept by a lot of new developments from analogue to digital,  tape to CD’s, super audio CD’s to mp3’s and more with online selling, download sites and even illegal download sites as a digital platform for the aspiring artist or musician.  Then we have the social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Vimeo, Flicker, Tumbler, WordPress, and more as the new age biggest and the easiest link for any budding singer/songwriter or musician to be heard and discovered globally.

Working for Polycosmic Records and Dyna Records from the analogue era up to the digital age I have personally seen and felt these changes and the way the market behaves especially in Asia where piracy is a “NORM”.   It’s part of the industry and you can’t get rid of it.

So, how did we do it then?  How can we do it?  Or simply, how can we get into the Music industry and be discovered internationally. A sure hit solution for any artist from the UK, USA, EU, Canada, Australia and outside the Philippines.

This is the music business and how it works is that an artist needs a good following.  Maybe a million hits on you tube, a million followers on twitter, a million followers on your FB like page, a million audience atleast I guess and then you can be noticed by record companies who likes the idea of profiting from your songs selling  this to a million audiences.

Say, you have a ready album recording of your original songs and compositions.

Before, in the mid 90’s, recording companies could easily sign up a singer to become an artist if you have a good recording voice, good materials and a presentable face and body.  Straight away they’ll sign you up and you’ll get to be noticed easily by an audience of more than 90 million (in the Philippines alone) talking about you on the radio, tv, print media and news tabloid, buying and listening to your music.

Now, with a market of more than 100 million plus 10 million abroad nobody would like to sign you up even if you have the voice, the recorded album on a CD master, good songs, sexy body.  Why ?  You need a good following… an audience… a network… a captured market from the point of view of the record company who will finance your project.  Mind you before you can get your slice of the pie the record company secures their share first.

Well, if no one will sign you up then do it yourself.  DIY it !  100% will be yours.

Get an adviser, acting manager or producer who knows the trick in that industry.  The Philippines has more than 100 million listeners locally and 10 million all over the globe.  This will be your audience so, what you need to do is get the top 3 tracks you have from your album recording and match it with the kind of genre this market wants.  You only need an audience to be discovered internationally and the throw and bounce effect works here.

Throw your materials in Asia to get a wider audience and have this following noticed by scouts and or record companies in the UK, EU, USA, CANADA, AUSTRALIA, and all over the globe.

No to record companies,  go for the label that will help you with a sure hit TRI-MEDIA solution which covers the following:  I know a few and it only starts from £19,500-£26,500.

1800’s Piano at the Salford Museum

1800's Piano at the Salford Museum

1800’s Piano at the Salford Museum I’ve discovered while looking for a music video shooting location.

I was amazed as having to play and touch this old piece of antique… and its a MINI Grand Piano the sound is just something like a wooden vintage tuned grand piano.  I just loved it … and to me this is a rare find really specially for musicians and pianists… better than the new age pieces…

Hopefully we can use this as part of our video shoot for a Music Video in Mastering.

A Talk at Salford Media City Next Generation Festival

Learning is a never ending process and knowledge is power.  ” Information is liberating.  Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family and community ” –  Koffi Annan.

Being a student at the same time a lecturer is not an easy job but having the power and opportunity to share what you have gained through experience is one very fulfilling role.  There are things we learn inside the classroom but there a valuable experiences outside the walls of Colleges and Universities that we learn through years of experience making each individual unique as a whole being and  making us stand out from the crowd.DSC00009

“As a lecturer, teacher, tutor, student and friend I believe that being in the academe is not only learning the numbers or the arts but it should have a holistic approach to motivation and inspiration.  Looking at the bigger picture in life and being a student of the world opens up opportunities and the horizon… gazing beyond and outside the walls of an educational institution gives another perspective to learning but more importantly is remembering the footprints we leave behind is a mark of an educator ”  by riclaps.

During the next generation Media City Festival last November 21st and 22nd 2013 I was given the opportunity to present to Salford University BSc PSVT (Professional Sound and Video Technology) students a talk about Studiospares Ltd..  A family run business based in London where I used to work. They have been in the Pro Audio industry for more than 30 years fighting against competition and beating any new players in the UK Pro Audio market. Studiospares is not just a company but a Legend I would say established by Barry Lambden a legend as well being the Chief Engineer for REVOX the maker and designer of the 8 track tape machine in the 80’s.

The Salford Media Festival in Manchester is the first Media Festival at MCUK attended by big names in the Broadcast and Media industry like the BBC, Dolby, Envy and AVID, Sony, and other known brands and companies in Cinema, Broadcast, TV and Audio Engineering, Media and Pro Audio.  And being part of this festival as a speaker is something I treasure.  Every participant was talking about their latest technology and introducing their companies and sales pitches but on the 2nd day while presenting Studiospares it was quite a unique and different experience.  Everybody was very quite and was just listening to each word I was telling them at the same time looking at the slides I was showing them about this company in London.2013-11-21 09.38.55

The Studiospares Catalogue is considered to be the pro audio bible in the UK with more 50,000 copies run each year for which I contributed 5 sections in research and product information from Recorders to Mixers to Mics and more.Cover

Another was the Esmono booth which was an exclusive Studiospares product coming from Denmark a portable recording studio we installed at the Amersham and Wycombe College.  Then another was the Excel Exhibition for the higher education sector attended by more than 60 thousand people worldwide. Microphone modification and design in Tube or Valve Technologies as well as headphone design for the M2000 with manufacturers links in the Far East. Various Demo days I have covered and attended from Allen and Heath, Focusrite, Novation, Audio Technica and more.  JZ microphones and NEVO studio the producer for Sugarbabes, Duran Duran, Girls Aloud, Alesha Dixon and Bryan Adams.   A training from a big Foam company in Belgium was another involvement as Studiospares the only company supplying 55kg density acoustic bass traps for room acoustic treatment.  And producing an album recording for ERELA MAE, a British Filipina artist based in London with most of my compositions and some of my musical arrangements.  This was launched last May 2012 and was recorded at Urban Chain Recording Studios & Clique Prductions with a friend engineer Paolo Silva from Portugal and John Robinson. Overseeing projects like this is a joy for me and the links I’ve established with these side companies and my involvement with projects through Studiospares I believe got the real attention of students who was looking to move forward in their careers in Audio, Video or Web.  These are valuable insights not taught inside the classrooms and it was great to have shared these to them.

DSC00020

I have written some articles as well which were made a basis for publishing the SN10 by SOS (Sound on Sound) and Audio Media.  Including Studiospares 30th year Anniversary.  I think the students did enjoy it as it was really suited to their level.  See photo below.

Students browsing through the Pro Audio Bible in the UK the Studiospares Catalogue where I contributed 5 sections.   A very useful reference in the Pro Audio from studio monitors, mixers, microphones, headphones, cables, and up to 8000 products.   Lastly,  the best part was when I announced that because of the benefit I did have from Studiospares I manage to ask for sponsorship for prizes for a surprise raffle draw for the students. 2013-11-22 14.48.50

Jennifer  and the other one was Chris Earl.  It was quite busy that I didn’t manage to get a picture with him.  But the whole talk was a success and it was the only one with a simple token for students to remember and serve as an inspiration I guess for them to strive more in their studies.

The Album Launch - ERELA MAE

May 12, 2013 will be ERELA MAE’s CD album launch very talented artist from Dagenham, London. She’s only 17 years old and the sweetest voice I’ve heard as well as a very humble easy to deal with attitude. With 10 unpublished compositions from the UK Songwriting Competition, USA Songwriting and Philpop music festival.  As album music producer I’m inviting you to come down to watch her live and get a copy of her album. “ERELA MAE”.

Mixing and Mastering done at Urban Chain Recording Studios, Clique Productions, Unit 8 in Hackney and Vanric Records as well as Peak Studios Philippines.

Very pleased that with my Social Technology class under Helen Keegan I have actually used the blogs for everything that has been going on with projects and even work at Studiospares. My work as Products, Marketing and Business Development for a big pro audio company has contributed much as well. Also, the side projects like this one.

I owe my filming and video production skills to Dr. Wilfred Darlington my mentor who used to spend 40 years of his life serving the BBC.

Paul Sayer you have been instrumental as well and this is one of the products of your inspiring students like me.

Thanking the Salford University and Media City Family from sir Josh Hirst, Phil Duncan, Bruno Fazenda, Dave Eustace, Henrick Mattson, Ben Shirley, Marrianne Patera, Dave Tolan and to those I forgot to mention Neil Bruce thanks a lot. I will update this blog when I remember the other names so don’t you worry.

Soundproofing Solution the ESMONO BOOTH only from Studiospares

I would like to share this to anybody out there looking to invest in a recording studio… yes one can get the best and most expensive studio monitors and gears but if your room acoustics is not up to standard then that will be money wasted in a way… having a treated room as well as acoustically tuned  in some ways would be ideal.  But if you want something easy and quick to install, modern stylish discrete design, reasonably priced, transportable and basically not a permanent structure which you could knock down take with you then assemble in a different location… check the Esmono Booth below is a video.

I’m one of the fortunate people who managed to film this Esmono Booth installation at Amersham & Wycombe college last Sat. 13th Oct. 2012.  Working for a big company in London who supplies to the Pro Audio market and the Recording Industry is a great opportunity.

The Esmono booth is a Sound studio, Recording studio, Rehearsal room … according to Esmono’s website… The “Freesound” sound studio (recording studio) gives you complete freedom to make musical noise any time of day or night, freedom to practice or play music. Whether you play bass, guitar or drums, the “Freesound” studio, isolation booth and rehearsal room gives you the freedom to play undisturbed.

Alone or in a group, you can work on your musical development to your heart’s content without being a nuisance to others or being bothered by noises from outside. Our studios are ideal for use as a recording studio for CD or DVD productions. The studios are also perfect for voice recordings or hearing tests. Our sound studios can also be used as a soundproofed bedroom for people with sleep disorders. from http://www.esmono.com

What more can you ask for ?  Two years of hard work and sacrifice …. and this is the fruit of that labor.  Final year to go after the placement and it’s done…

It was this afternoon 13th of September 2012 when the postman came, dropped the mail to my door and I got three letters.  Two were slightly smaller and one in a bigger brown envelope.  After I flipped it over it said to came from Salford University – CSE Department.  “Well,  I said to myself, could be my transcript for the 2011-2012 school year but when I opened it… it was something else.  It’s when you need 50 quid and you wait and it just comes to you and all you need is to fill-up some forms and the cash will be in your bank account after.  Wahooooo….. well I wished I’d won the lottery but man… 50 quid is 50 quid… it’s not the money though ’cause there was something else along with the cash.  Again I thought it was a scholarship for this Final Year so I won’t have to do a placement to save some more to survive the UK economy… hehehe… but then again it was something else.  I just wished some University or educational institution would notice and would offer me a full-time Masters Degree Scholarship after I finish my final year at Salford University.  But anyway, it was a School Prize Certificate from the Acoustics, Digital Media and Audio Engineering Department.  Wow ! … presented to Evangel Ric Lapore for the outstanding academic performance at Level 5 during the 2011/12 academic year.  Signed by Professor S Vadera – Acting Head of School.  I was speechless … and the letter said,  as you maybe aware each discipline group within the School of Computing, Science and Engineering awards annual prizes for each level of study to the students with the highest Programme Total for that level.  I am pleased to inform you that you have been awarded the Acoustics, Digital Media and Audio Engieering Level 5 prize in recognition of your performance during the last academic year.  Wow !  lastly, it said, on behalf of the whole… no no no… on behalf of the School I would like to congratulate you on your achievement. – Acting Head of School.  Wow !!!

Now, all I can say is Thank you … Thank you… and Thank you … and I would like to specially thank my Professors for this achievement.  If not because of them I won’t be able to achieve this… Sir Paul Sayer thanks a lot,  Sir Dr. Wilfred Darlington thanks a lot,  Ma’am Helen Keegan thank you very much,  Sir Ben Shirley thank you very much, Sir Dr. Jos Hirst thanks very much,  Dr. Phil Duncan thank you, Dr. Bruno Fazenda thank you, Dr. Neil Bruce thanks, Mr. Producer Dave Tolan and Mr. Dave Eustace thank you very much,  Mr. Jose Sarmiento (of the Media Dept.)  thanks for letting me join your post production classes, to Henrrick the man for the studios thank you, to my group mates (Nathan, Jonny & company) and the first batch of the Bsc Professional Sound and Video Technology thank you… to the See TV Team (Kabir, Nick and Derek) thank you and to those I forget to mention and to you who’s reading this thank you.

Without you all I wouldn’t get the opportunity to be invited to talk about Audio Engineering and the Media City UK at SAE Romania, at iAcademy in Makati Philippines and at De La Salle University St. Beniled in the Philippines.  I just hope one day some scholarship for a masters degree will come my way just like that £50 pounds… but all together thank you very much… and I am very proud to accept this from our School of Acoustics, Digital Media and Audio Engineering group.

Hope to see you all again soon… God bless you.

Vangel and Rico under Dyna Records Philippines

Remembering more than a decade of music making and music production I accidentally came across a photo album while in the Philippines to see my parents last June 2012.

The Photo album was more than 10 years old and it had all the news paper clippings for our album released in 2001 under Dyna Records Philippines.  The group started as the Firstborn Band and ended with Vangel and Rico for the Philpop music industry.  It took us 9 long years of touring and doing Barangay Concerts before me and partner Rico got 3 offers from Nonoy Tan, Alpha Records and Dyna Records.  The truth was we only had two songs recorded that time when Howard Dy rang and spoke to us… after that we managed to pull off 13 tracks for them to choose from.  This was a masterpiece for me as all the song titles can be made into a single sentence which still relates to the whole album theme and concept.

PANGAKO was the title of the album which mean Promise… and the song titles were … Pangako, Mahal Kita, Dahil Ikaw, ang Panaginip ng Torpe kong puso so, When you remember me, Nandito Lang Ako, at Sana, Ikaw Mahal, Ingatan mo ang Pag-ibig ko…

So, 10 songs which creates a single sentence.

Thanks to Jay Durias of Southborder, Joey Narciso for the guitar lines, Boyet Manahan for producing the album, Boboy and Angee Rozul of Tracks Recording, Howard Dy for believing in us… and lastly to you who’s reading this… thanks.   Watch the video…  below and listen to When you remember me…

De Lasalle University – College of Saint Benilde is one of the pioneering schools offering recording arts degrees and media in the Philippines.  It’s been a great opportunity to be holding a masterclass there for students in the school of Design and Arts… (Music Production)

Very excited to be invited by their Dean Agnes Asunta – Manalo for a talk there on the 17th-19th of July 2012.  It will be about my Audio Journey and Media City UK as well as the UK Music Business.

Hope after this I will be coming back next year for another tour… like that one I’ve done in Poland last March and hopefully soon in SAE Romania … if you are curious then check out my showreel below…

I believe in the power of education… nobody can take away what you have learned from the Academe or through experience… if you get both then you got something to celebrate and be proud of… knowledge is power … so,  never stop learning and training yourself… age doesn’t matter … learning is forever…

I just can’t help but share this success once again this time…  Celebrate with me friends… you are all part of this success… emailed my adviser about the marks after the examiners had their confirmations…  and here his reply…

Wherever You Will Go (Cover Version) TRIP Single Pinas 2012

Trip is a single cover version of the popular song “wherever you will go” originally by the Calling.  X-Factor contestant Sophie Habibis revived this track last year 2011 and went onto the semi-finals.  One of my favorite tracks really.

Very interesting recording experience (one take on vocals) in one of the sort of recording studio in the Philippines.  Here’s their set-up… a small 6 channel mixer, Chinese clone dynamic mic called Shure SM90A with foam, stand, main out straight to computers built-in micro jack input, Adobe Soundbooth and pair of headphones both me and the “recording engineer” was sharing together.  No headphone mix I was just hearing the distorted backing track.  There was no booth but only floating AMAKAN sort of wall on my left and right and it was open,  every time a customer comes in to inquire I can hear them talking… what happened was.  First I visited the studio inquired about recording… very cheap Php 300 only… that’s about £4.41 for an hours recording session, I have to give them a list of my songs (4 songs) and after three days they got back to me and said  it was ready as they have to download the backing track from the net (3 days to download 4 backing tracks)  and this is what I got.

Well,  this was my own version of mix and master.  I don’t have anything with me just my laptop, in-ear phones, take note in-ear phones costing about £10 in UK, cubase sx, and the stems on mp3 they gave me.  While I was recording they had a hard time adjusting the levels as it was distorting on my headphones, nobody knows what’s what… and I couldn’t even hear myself just the backing track.  Anyway, I guess soundbooth was capturing my vocals uncompressed WAV but the engineer funnily converts  my takes into 128-bit mp3’s… I don’t know why but I am super surprised of how he processes my audio.  I told him save them on WAV files I want my copies on WAV files for the stems but then He doesn’t know so I left it with him. He said, in the meantime sir we will covert them to mp3’s then when I mix it and burn we will convert them to WAV Files… so, if you know what I’m talking about then you be the judge.

Good news the next day all four songs were ready… I was excited to take a listen and came down to the studio.  I listened first to this track… OMG… my vocals were playing in advance than the backing track… a NO NO NO … in recording… I did sing it in time but their mixdown had timing issues.  So, this is why I was forced to mix and master it myself using the limited tools I have.  Well, here it is folks… my simple TRIP version of the Callings “Wherever You Will Go”… hope you enjoy my story…

WHEREVER YOU WILL GO

by The Calling (Lyrics)

So lately, been  wondering
Who will be there to take my place
When I’m gone, you’ll need love
To light the shadows on your face

If a greater wave shall fall
And fall upon us all
Then between the sand and stone
Could you make it on your own?

If I could, then I would
I’ll go wherever you will go
Way up high or down low
I’ll go wherever you will go

And maybe I’ll find out
A way to make it back someday
To watch you, to guide you
Through the darkest of your days

If a great wave shall fall
And fall upon us all
Well then I hope there’s someone out there
Who can bring me back to you

If I could, then I would
I’ll go wherever you will go
Way up high or down low
I’ll go wherever you will go

Run away with my heart
Run away with my hope
Run away with my love

I know now, just quite how
My life and love might still go on
In your heart, in your mind
I’ll stay with you for all of time

If I could, then I would
I’ll go wherever you will go
Way up high or down low
I’ll go wherever you will go

If I could turn back time
I’ll go wherever you will go
If I could make you mine
I’ll go wherever you will go
I’ll go wherever you will go
